Alliance for Arab Women

The Alliance for Arab Women is an Eygptian NGO founded in 1987 that works as an umbrella to a network of 350 Eygptian civil society organisation and cooperates with other Egyptian and Arab organizations to provide women with basic human security through influencing policies and legislations, and by providing services and programs within the framework of human rights.

The organisation’s secretariat is based in Cairo with a number of branches in Upper and Lower Egypt. The AAW General Assembly includes 100 Egyptians from both sexes as well as members from other Arab countries.

The Alliance works with other stakeholders – such as workers’ unions, universities and the media – to raise awareness for women’s rights and has 26 projects across Eygpt. AAW has also produced 21 films that address the main issues of the Egyptian society and its diverse groups, particularly those concerning women. AAW has a consultative status with the UN ( ECOSOC) and has also previously been selected as the coordinator for Arab NGOs at the International Conference on Women and at the UN General Assembly.

Saferworld has been working with AAW since 2012 on a joint programme on identifying and helping to address the security barriers to women’s political participation in Egypt, Yemen and Libya.
