Historic day as Arms Trade Treaty enters into force

Wednesday 24 December 2014 marks a historic moment as the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) becomes international law. For those from civil society and progressive governments who have worked towards this goal for many years it is a day of which we can be proud, a hugely important staging post on the march towards responsible regulation of the international arms trade. Nevertheless there should be no resting on laurels. Much remains to be done to ensure that the Treaty has an impact where it matters most – on the ground in regions of conflict and where human rights are in crisis.

Engaging new global actors in peace and development

A recent Saferworld conference in Istanbul provided a rare opportunity for stakeholders from conflict-affected states, emerging global powers, and traditional development actors to debate key issues of peace and development. The conference discussions highlighted that while there are differences between their approaches, there is much they can learn from each other’s experiences to help address these immensely complex and deep-rooted issues.
