Somali civil society 'quest for peace'

In March, the first General Assembly of Somalia South Central Non-State Actors (SOSCENSA) took place in Entebbe, Uganda. The three-day General Assembly was attended by 50 leading non-state actors (NSAs) from South-Central Somalia, including representatives from NGOs, the private sector and professional associations. It marked an important milestone in establishing a platform for civil society to engage with Somali and international policy-makers on issues of development and peace-building.

Following the SOSCENSA General Assembly was a three-day dialogue meeting that brought together over 150 leaders of Somali civil society, almost half of whom came from the diaspora. Entitled Bringing together Somali civil society in the quest for peace, the objective was to build consensus on how Somali civil society can most effectively contribute to peace-building in the country. Participants included members of SOSCENSA, Somali NGOs, business leaders, women’s groups, religious leaders, academics, the media and traditional elders.

Both meetings were organised in partnership with the Mogadishu-based Centre for Research & Dialogue and Interpeace, with funding provided by the European Commission.
