Eastern Europe and the Caucasus

What are the challenges in Eastern Europe the Caucasus?

The safety and security of people living in this part of the world is compromised because of:

  • unresolved conflicts
  • weak governance
  • the proliferation of small arms and light weapons
  • poor policing

The August 2008 war over South Ossetia has had a significant impact on stability in the region. The region remains fragile, trends towards peace and reconciliation have been weakened, and there is a significant risk for future crises and even for a return to violence.

What we do

  • work directly with donors and development organisations, governments, parliaments and civil society on promoting more coherent and effective international policy and practice, developing interventions that address the root causes of conflict and instability, conflict-sensitive development, arms transfer controls and security sector reform
  • train and support civil society in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus to work with their governments on responding to conflict and instability, issues relating to their safety and security and arms controls
