Europe

Europe and Saferworld

We work on arms control, security and development issues in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus and South Eastern Europe.

Our Europe team is based in London with a member of staff in Pristina, Kosovo. We work closely with partner organisations across the region.

What are the challenges in Europe?

There are significant security challenges in Eastern Europe the Caucasus and South Eastern Europe. These include:

  • a number of unresolved conflicts
  • weak governance
  • a failure to address small arms proliferation
  • weak arms transfer controls
  • poor policing

What we do in Europe

We focus on improving the safety and security of communities by:

  • researching safety and security issues
  • promoting new approaches to meet the security needs of communities
  • working with communities and law enforcers to help them develop patnerships to tackle insecurity
  • working with governments, parliaments and civil society to strengthen international and national arms transfer controls
  • developing and supporting the implementation of small arms controls
  • promoting conflict-sensitive development so that development policy and planning takes into account conflict risks and causes.
  • supporting and training civil society to work with their governments on security, arms and conflict issues
