What are the challenges in Kenya?

Kenya tends to be viewed as one of the more stable countries in Africa. Although not in a state of open conflict, its citizens suffer from high levels of insecurity.

Security issues include:

  • small arms trafficked to and from neighbouring states
  • violent crime involving firearms
  • inter-ethnic clashes
  • resource competition, including cattle rustling
  • instability in neighbouring countries

Kibera man What we do in Kenya

Our work in Kenya is wide-ranging and includes:

  • supporting Kenya’s engagement in regional small arms control initiatives
  • helping to carry out a national action plan for small arms control
  • working with our partner, PeaceNet, to promote police reform through community-based policing
  • promoting conflict-sensitive development
  • providing training to help the Government and civil society to address arms and conflict issues

News and activities

In May, Saferworld brought together community elders, peace committee representatives, religious leaders and youth from the Mt Elgon area in Kenya to discuss the peace and security situation since the recent military intervention in the area.

We also supported and facilitated an inter-district peace meeting in Isiolo, which brought together the District Security and Intelligence Committees, the District Peace Committees, the Community Policing Committee, and a number of other important local actors from Isiolo and the neighbouring districts. Participants discussed strategies for addressing a range of inter-district conflict issues, including disputed district boundaries, the use and smuggling of illegal firearms, cattle-rustling, and the fencing-off of land by private conservancies.
