What are the challenges in Moldova?

The Republic of Moldova is notable for its ongoing frozen conflict with the separatist region of Transdniestria.

The conflict is hindering progress towards an economically viable and democratic state.

Additional challenges facing Moldova include:

  • the need to reform security agencies
  • weak border controls
  • cross-border trafficking of arms

What we do in Moldova

In Moldova, we concentrate on police reform and small arms control.

With our partner, the Institute for Public Policy (IPP), we are working with the Moldovan Government to establish an effective, modern and professional police service that is both democratic and community-focused.

We have also made a detailed survey of small arms proliferation and control throughout the country, to help inform the policy of the Moldovan Government and international agencies.

News and activities

In April, we visited Chisinau, Moldova, to undertake a number of activities to help implement the reform inception programme and to wrap up financial reporting for 07-08.

We also met with local partners, the Institute for Public Policy and the Moldovan Ministry of Internal Affairs to help develop our exit strategy from Moldova.
