What are the challenges in Nepal?

Nepal is currently in a period of transition.

Despite the signing of a peace agreement between the Nepali Government and the Maoist rebels in November 2006, development in Nepal continues to be obstructed by:

  • insecurity
  • continued ethnic, caste and gender discrimination
  • poor law and order provision and enforcement
  • unrest in the Tarai region

Although people feel that community and individual security is better than it was during the conflict, there is still room for improvement in policing and the security sector.

Nepali girl What we do in Nepal

We are working to ensure that professional, democratic and accountable security is provided to meet the needs of the Nepali public - this is crucial for long-lasting peace in the country.

With local partners, including the Institute of Human Rights Communication and Interdisciplinary Analysts we are:

  • carrying out research on the public’s perception of policing
  • ensuring the views of the public on safety and security issues are heard by decision-makers
  • raising awareness and promoting dialogue on how security provision can be achieved by local actors with international support
