Small arms surveys

Researching small arms in Europe

Saferworld has made detailed studies of countries and territories in South Eastern and Eastern Europe to examine the nature and extent of the spread of small arms and governments' ability to maintain adequate controls over them.

These surveys have been carried out in Albania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova and Serbia and combine qualitative and quantitative research methods to:

  • assess the nature of small arms possession in the country/ territory
  • assess and highlight the nature of small arms trafficking and circulation
  • demonstrate the human and social impact of small arms use
  • outline the measures needed to control small arms use
  • outline the scale and scope of the small arms problem in relation to other social, economic and political issues

We focus our research on policy and action and source information from as wide a range of actors as possible. We include the government departments responsible for arms control and policing in our consultations so that the research findings can inform government policy and action.
