What are the challenges in South Eastern Europe?

A legacy of violent conflict together with factors such as weak state institutions and the ready availability of small arms continue to undermine states' ability to provide security in this region.

The countries and territories of South Eastern Europe are developing closer ties with the European Union and slowly reforming their security services in line with EU and NATO requirements, but much remains to be done to ensure:

  • adequate security provision
  • effective oversight of the security sector
  • robust arms transfer controls
