What are the challenges in South Eastern Europe?

A legacy of violent conflict together with factors such as weak state institutions and the ready availability of small arms continue to undermine states' ability to provide security in this region.

The countries of South Eastern Europe are developing closer ties with the European Union and slowly reforming their security services in line with EU and NATO requirements, but much remains to be done to ensure:

  • adequate security provision
  • effective oversight of the security sector
  • robust arms transfer controls

What we do in South Eastern Europe

We work closely with local civil society organisations, national governments and international organisations to:

Hear a UK MP discuss development and security in Kosovo

Read a case study about community safety in Kosovo

We also support the South East European Network for the Control of Arms (SEENCA), a network of non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations and individuals, working across South Eastern Europe on the issue of small arms and light weapons control.
