Although the civil war between North and South Sudan officially came to an end in 2005 when the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed, sustainable peace remains a distant prospect.

In March, Saferworld and international and Sudanese partners organised a meeting in Juba bringing representatives of civil society from across Southern Sudan’s 10 states and the transitional areas together to discuss community security and arms control. In the first meeting of its kind, participants presented their views on the problems where they live, explored what is being done to address these problems, and produced a communiqué to the Government of Southern Sudan outlining a civil society position on community security and arms control. Several participants also established a task force to improve civil society co-ordination across Southern Sudan on security issues.
