Timor-Leste
People's Peacemaking Perspectives
Summary
As Timor-Leste’s elections approach, young people, martial arts groups and other groups need to be brought into democratic processes to prevent their manipulation for political violence. This is one of a number of recommendations in this policy briefing examining the risks of electoral violence in this fragile country.
The briefing’s recommendations focus on countering the dominance of divisive rhetoric, misinformation and rumour in national politics; engaging young people and martial arts groups; and strengthening longer term local conflict prevention mechanisms. These recommendations are based on consultations with community members, civil society, government and the international community in four districts in Timor-Leste and the capital, Dili.
This briefing is part of the EU-funded ‘People’s Peacemaking Perspectives’ project, a joint initiative implemented by Conciliation Resources and Saferworld and financed under the European Commission's Instrument for Stability. The project provides European Union institutions with analysis and recommendations based on the opinions and experiences of local people in a range of countries and regions affected by fragility and violent conflict.
