Changing attitudes to guns

How Saferworld is supporting action to control arms in Kenya

Saferworld trains local law enforcement agents and the communities they serve on small arms and light weapons (SALW) control and supports initiatives for ensuring accountability and responsible use of firearms by law enforcement officers including auxiliary police deployed in pastoral areas of Kenya.

3. The problem is exacerbated by the easy availability of arms due to cross border trafficking, leaks from government armouries and even misuse of state owned firearms. The high prevalence of weapons fuels cycles of conflict and undermines development.

5. Saferworld is working with local partners PeaceNet and SIKOM in North Pokot to support community based initiatives for arms management and control.  Reformed warriors are encouraged to voluntarily surrender their guns through an adult education and sports programme.

7. At the same time Saferworld works at the national level to enable the Kenyan Government to develop and review its policies on SALW and implement them effectively. We support civil society to monitor and raise awareness of the issue through the Kenya National Action Network on SALW.

8. Saferworld participates in the destruction of illegal firearms in Kenya at an event coordinated by the Kenya Police and the Kenya National Focal Point on SALW. A total of 2545 firearms collected over the past year were destroyed by burning, crushing and smelting. The weapons were collected through voluntary surrenders, such as those in North Pokot, as well through disarmament initiatives and police operations in crime prone areas.
