Gender, peace and security

Decades of armed conflict have left their mark on gender dynamics in Myanmar; and insecurity and injustice have impacted men and women differently. While there are clear indications of shifting gender dynamics – for example, women taking over local political leadership during the height of the war in various villages across Karen areas – the full impact of decades of structural and direct violence on gender dynamics remains largely under-researched. Saferworld aims to fill these knowledge gaps in Myanmar by conducting research that looks at the impact of conflict and peace on shaping gender identities. We will use this to inform our programmes to challenge existing gender norms that perpetuate violence and social inequalities.
