Promoting peace and security in the post-2015 framework in Europe

17 October 2013

In November 2013 Saferworld will be participating in the European Development Days 2013 (EDD13) forum. Organised by the European Commission, EDD13 will focus this year on the post-2015 development agenda. Saferworld is a key stakeholder for the forum organising two panel discussion on the topic of fragile states, peace and security together with the European Commission, the European External Action Service, UNDP, Cordaid, Platforma, and Friends of Europe: ‘Post-2015: Objective peace’ and “Tackling conflict and violence post-2015”.

In its February 2013 Communication ‘A Decent Life for All’, the EU outlined its vision for the post-2015 framework, highlighting peace and security as one of the key priorities to pursue. There were other important landmarks for peace and security in the post-2015 agenda such as the UN High Level Panel report in May and at the UN General Assembly in September. On 26-27 November Saferworld will sit on two panels at the European Development Days Forum 2013 (EDD13) focusing on the post-2015 debate which will be opportunities to take stock of developments so far as well as challenges and opportunities in the processes ahead.

Saferworld’s Director of Programmes El Khidir Daloum will speak on the high-level panel session: ‘Post-2015: Objective peace’ on Tuesday 26 November. The panel will discuss how conflict and violence have been hampering development in different contexts (Mali, Afghanistan, Horn of Africa) what we can learn from responses so far, especially the ‘New Deal’ and finally what are the best ways to uphold values and principles underpinning a peace building perspective on the post-2015 framework. Other speakers include the EC Director General for Development Cooperation DEVCO , deputy director general, Cordaid CEO, EEAS deputy secretary general, Timbuktu first deputy mayor.

Head of Policy Larry Attree will sit on an expert panel entitled ‘Tackling conflict and violence post-2015: towards an effective accountability framework’,  to discuss both the ‘what’ should be measured and the ‘how’ progress towards peace can be effectively measured. Other speakers will include UNDP, EC and EEAS representatives, as well as from the Afghan Women’s Network.

“These EDD panels are a great opportunity to bring together speakers from different background to discuss how we can join forces in the process ahead and identify what we can all do collectively to ensure the post-2015 framework effectively supports sustainable peace” said Sébastien Babaud, EU advocacy coordinator. The event will be live-streamed via the European Development Days website and Saferworld will be tweeting from the event.
