Promoting peaceful societies at the European Development Days

Saferworld is convening a debate on building peaceful societies at the European Development Days (EDD) event which is taking place on 15 and 16 June 2016 in Brussels.

Organised by the European Commission, the EDD is Europe’s leading forum on development and international cooperation. Each year it attracts about 5,000 participants from over 140 countries, representing approximately 1,200 organisations working on development cooperation, human rights and humanitarian aid.

This year the EDD will focus on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In recognition of the impact of violence and insecurity on development in all countries, the 2030 Agenda includes peace as a cross-cutting priority as well as a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 16). In order to start leveraging the new development agenda to make a real difference to people’s lives, we want to start a conversation about what really makes societies peaceful.

Focused on the universality of the 2030 Agenda, our interactive session will compare and learn from a variety of contexts where citizens, civil society and communities are mobilising to make their own societies more peaceful, just and inclusive. To do so, we will bring together active citizens from very different contexts – Latin America, North America, Europe and Eastern Africa – to share their experiences and innovative approaches to reducing violence and building peace at community level.

Once you are registered for the conference you do not have to register for specific sessions, but given the size of the event it’s advisable to allow plenty of time on the day.
