What does the new data protection law mean for Saferworld?

25 May 2018

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force today in Europe and the UK. It puts in place new protections for the collection, processing and storage of data by businesses and organisations in an effort to give people more control of how their personal information is used. The new law replaces the Data Protection Directive of 1995 (and the Data Protection Act 1998 in the UK), updating its terms for an ever-evolving digital age.

In the UK, data protection legislation is covered by a new Data Protection Act 2018 that incorporates GDPR.

Saferworld is committed to transparency and the right to privacy. To fully comply with the new regulations, we have made some changes to the website and to how we process your data, including the below:

  • We have updated our privacy policy to reflect changes to how we process data, including our retention policy. We have also outlined all of the different external services we use on the website and how they collect data.
  • We added extra information to our contact page and donation page to clarify what data we collect and how long we keep it.
  • Our process for gaining consent for people appearing in our photos and videos has been revisited and strengthened.
  • To fully comply with GDPR, we will only send emails to people who have signed up to our opt-in newsletter page. You can sign up for our various lists here.

At any time, you can also get in touch with us to request access to the data we hold on you or to ask us to amend or delete this information. We will respond to any such requests within seven days.

If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at communications@saferworld.org.uk
