Canada International Assistance Review: Saferworld submission

This submission to Canada’s international assistance review provides Saferworld’s reflections on how Canada might take forward its work on peace and people’s security, including through the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, showing leadership on peace issues on the international stage, and supporting civil society.

Canada has a long history of working on peace issues, including international leadership on peacekeeping, the development of the concept of the Responsibility to Protect, and a history of development engagement in conflict-affected contexts. Canada has an important and progressive part to play in promoting a safer and more stable world in a time of growing crisis. Canada should build on these strengths and act as a champion for peace issues internationally, focusing on strategic long-term work to address the causes of conflict.
