Public perceptions of the Belt and Road Initiative: Guiding ‘win-wins’ for people, business and policy makers

Since its official launch in 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has evolved into a global platform at the heart of China’s international development co-operation. This report outlines the impact of the BRI in three countries – Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar and Uganda – and explains how BRI projects and investments affect peace in these countries.

The report draws on original data acquired through interviews conducted with civil society representatives from all three countries. Based on the findings, the report presents recommendations on how to provide infrastructure development in a conflict- and gender-sensitive manner, how to more effectively mitigate external risks before they become reality, and how to ensure that BRI projects at the very least do no harm and, at best, contribute positively towards long-term peace and security.
