Women’s role in improving security in Egypt, Libya and Yemen
Meeting summary
Saferworld held a regional conference as part of the 'Strengthening women’s public voices in Egypt, Libya and Yemen' project, in Tunis from 3 to 5 March 2014, looking at women’s role in improving security.
The conference brought together women activists from Egypt, Libya and Yemen, who had been active in the 'Our Voice, Our Strength' network over the past two years, to discuss women’s role in improving security in their countries. The participation of network members allowed the conference to build on past exchanges and delve deeper into the issues, focusing on roles that women could play at the local and national levels in order to have a more active role in addressing the security concerns of women and wider communities.
Discussions centred on women’s potential roles in the security sector, in shaping media reporting about security issues and violence against women, and in improving security at the local level.

ضمن فعاليات مشروع "تعزيز الصوت العام للمرأة في مصر وليبيا واليمن"، عقدت منظمة سيفرورلد مؤتمرا إقليميا في تونس العاصمة بين الثالث والخامس من مارس 2014 لبحث دور المرأة في تحسين مستوى الأمن.
وقد ضم المؤتمر ناشطات من مصر وليبيا واليمن كن قد شاركن على مدى العامين الأخيرين في شبكة "صوتنا قوتنا"، وذلك لمناقشة دور المرأة في تحسين الأمن في بلدانهن. وإن مشاركة الناشطات من شبكة "صوتنا قوتنا" قد مكن المؤتمر من التقدم والبناء على المداولات السابقة والتعمق في تناول القضايا، إذ تمحور على الأدوار التي يمكن للمرأة أداءها بفاعلية أكبر على المستوى المحلي والوطني بغرض معالجة الهموم الأمنية للمرأة ولعموم المجتمع.
وقد تركزت النقاشات على الأدوار التي يمكن للمرأة الاضطلاع بها في القطاع الأمني وفي صوغ التقارير الإعلامية عن القضايا الأمنية والعنف ضد المرأة، فضلا عن دورها في تحسين الأمن على المستوى المحلي.

“Participants highlighted that insecurity is experienced at a local level and that government institutions focus too much on a top-down ‘national security’ paradigm. Working on the local level is therefore an essential part of women’s role in improving security.”
