Russia and China's changing roles in the region and the implications for peace and stability

The launch of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank in June 2015 highlights China's economic and strategic ambitions, and will accelerate its economic expansion into Central Asia. Over the past two years, Saferworld has been researching China's growing engagement in Central Asia, as well as the changing role of the traditional regional hegemon, Russia – and analysing how the shifting dynamics between these two powers affect prospects for peace and stability in the region.

This report – available in in Chinese, Russian and English – summarises the findings of Saferworld's research. It assesses what impact Russia and China’s changing roles are likely to have upon conflict drivers and dynamics in the region, and considers how the relationship between the two powers in Central Asia may evolve – whether one of continued pragmatic cooperation or of growing competition.
