United Nations

Saferworld works with United Nations agencies, funds, programmes and member states to ensure that the needs and perspectives of those affected by conflict are prioritised by UN initiatives, resolutions and interventions. We advocate putting conflict-affected people's priorities at the forefront of peacebuilding and prevention processes. We work on issues related to young people, gender, civic space, human rights, peacekeeping, peacebuilding and counter-terrorism.

Our work

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which seeks to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable development, is one of the most ambitious and relevant global initiatives in recent years. Saferworld played a prominent role in pushing for peace, as both a dedicated goal and a cross-cutting issue in the Agenda. We also led efforts to develop the global Arms Trade Treaty (adopted at the UN 2014), and, together with other organisations, have been central in pushing for greater inclusion of gender issues in other international processes relating to peace and security.

In 2022, we helped establish the Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights and Counter-Terrorism, a global network of civil society organisations advocating for an end to the misuse of counter-terrorism measures. Saferworld USA acts as the host organisation for the Coalition’s Secretariat and is a part of the coalition’s steering group. We push for greater protection of human rights and civic space in counter-terrorism responses.
