Supporting Somali journalists and amplifying women's voices with Jubaland Women Journalists

“When you are in the media – women face many challenges. However, these challenges did not stop my work because I kept going.”

Despite the lack of women-owned news platforms, Somali women realised the needs to amplify their voices and address the challenges they face daily. Dedicated to shifting power to women by developing their journalism skills, the Jubaland Women Journalists organisation (JWJ) has been making great strides in supporting women working in Somali media.

It’s vital that women’s voices and perspectives are at the forefront of reporting around women’s rights and gender-based violence in Somali media. Better representation of women at all levels of Somali media will help grow awareness and build accountability around women’s struggles. Along with Somali Women Studies Centre (SWSC), Saferworld is proud to support JWJ.
