Saferworld colleague killed in Sudan

9 November 2023

Saferworld is deeply saddened to confirm that Osama Ataa Mohamed, who worked as the caretaker for Saferworld’s office in Khartoum, was killed after being shot while defending his home on Thursday 2 November. Employed by our Khartoum office landlord, Osama had been part of our team since 2020.

Osama had warm relationships with Saferworld staff who referred to him affectionately as Ammu (Uncle) Osama. His caring manner touched the lives of every one of the team.

"Osama’s death is a devastating reminder of the impact of the conflict on the people of Sudan. My memory of Ammu Osama was his respect for time, dedication to his work, and the constant smile on his face. He was never late, always present, and completely professional. Osama was also a proud father of a daughter and three sons. Our thoughts are with his family." Lucy Atim, Country Director of Saferworld's Sudan programme.
