Defining the endgame: civil society voices on how to build a just, stable Somalia

Following the elections in May 2022, Somalia has seen significant community uprisings against al-Shabaab, and the new government has declared the fight against the group to be its top priority. But will it solve the root cause of conflict?

This briefing presents the perspectives of Somali civil society representatives on the security situation and challenges in the country. Based on interviews conducted in November and December 2022, the briefing elaborates what the interviewees identified as their most crucial human security concerns, priorities and needs – while considering the gendered dynamics of conflict and insecurity, including the views of women and marginalised groups. It also brings forward their perspectives on how international engagement could better support conflict transformation, peacebuilding and reconciliation.
