Violent conflict overseas threatens lives, undermines development, fuels human rights abuses and can threaten UK national security by allowing terrorist networks to flourish. Conflict can also be expensive for the UK, incurring the costs of humanitarian assistance or military intervention. But violent conflicts are not inevitable.  As well as responding to conflict after it has broken out, the UK has an important role to play in helping prevent violence before it starts.
