Women, peace and security

Without women there can be no sustainable peace in Yemen – it is crucial for women to be included in all peace talks and peacebuilding efforts, and for society to mobilise all its societal capacities and talents. Saferworld supports its Yemeni partners to increase women’s participation in local peacebuilding. We address gaps in knowledge about women’s activism; strengthen existing women’s initiatives; and promote the essential role of women in conflict prevention and resolution locally, nationally and internationally.

As part of our Resourcing Change project – in partnership with Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom and Women for Women International – six women’s rights organisations in Yemen received an average of £35,000 in flexible core funding, enabling them to continue to respond to self-identified community needs, strengthen their organisational capacities to work independently, and come together and learn from each other.

In partnership with Yemeni civil society organisations Peace for Sustainable Societies and the National Organisation for Community Development, we have established two women activists’ hubs – one in Aden and one in Taiz – that provide forums for discussion, decision-making and coordinated action by women activists.
