The current conflict has left many women as the sole providers for their children and families – either because they have been widowed or because their husbands and sons are away from home for the war. Many women have taken on the role of first responders and humanitarian workers, yet they are also active participants in the conflict, supporting fighters or manning checkpoints.
Saferworld and our partners NFDHR and Wogood Foundation support the role of women's initiatives in local peacebuilding. We address gaps in knowledge about women’s local activism; we strengthen existing initiatives; and we promote the essential role of women in conflict prevention and resolution locally, nationally and internationally. Women’s empowerment is an urgent priority: without women there can be no sustainable peace in Yemen. We believe it is crucial for women to be included in all peace talks and peacebuilding efforts.
